All told 11,609 thoroughbred broodmares and their progeny are included in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Stud Book, Volume XXX.

Traditionally the publication is produced every three years but the current edition involved a four-year span. The publication is now carried on the Thoroughbred Racing Inc website, giving the industry easier access to the information. The New Zealand broodmare population has decreased in recent times. There were 15,963 matrons and their progeny listed in 1991, decreasing to 11,609 in 2004. In the period under review something like 850 female horses were imported into New Zealand along with 400 males.

There has been a reduction in the numbers involving non registered racehorses. There were 971 non-registered animals recorded in 1984 and only 160 in 2004. Many females known as „vehicle mares‰ have been added to the stud book folio. These are matrons carrying seven throughbred crosses in their pedigrees and by stallions eligible for the stud Book.

Unlike other interenational stud books the New Zealand edition carries all the foals produced by the broodmares not just the youngsters bred since the year 2000 edition. The Bruce Lowe family number is included in each broodmare carried in the 2004 volume. It appears only three stud books in the world provide this important identification information.
