Australian research fellow Geoffrey Hutson has a dual passion.
He's a self confessed inveterate gambler and gained a Ph D in animal
behavioural patterns. He merged the two factors and
the result is his recently released book Watching Racehorses.
Hutson went racing on a regular basis but was always losing. It
cost him plenty. With his academic background he elected to research
why some horses were equine losers and just a handful survived
and paid their way. In the process he inspected 10,000 horses on
raceday
He found 65 reasons why horses were racetrack losers and was able
to identify those carrying these negative factors. In his wagering
preparation he cast aside the potential losers to focus on the
likely winners.
In his book he claims the strappers can tell the observant punter
if the horse in their care is destined to be a loser. Watch them
carefully in the parade ring and the birdcage, Hutson claims.
The author claims races for two-year-olds and and those restricted
to fillies and mares are the best to pursue. They are less complicated
than dealing with colts and geldings.
By the way Hutson has quit the university career to concentrate
on watching horses. He doesn't pursue major punting coups
but relies on a little and often. The New Zealand retail price
is $NZ 58:00
