MELBOURNE CUP 1861 - 2000

Maurice Cavanough with Rhett Kirkwood and Brian Meldrum

Maurice
Cavanough, soldier, footballer , cricketer and journalist is the
doyan figure in Melbourne Cup histories, compiling his first title
in 1960. He then added a further eight editions till 1982.
In
his twilight years he worked with Rhett Kirkwood and Brian Meldrum
to produce the 2001 edition , sadly passing in July 2001 before
this edition was published.
The
current title is larger in size and content than the earlier editions
and the cup years are analysed into various sections. The present
one beginning with Kingston Rule's 1990 victory over The Phantom
and Mr Brooker in called " the web of intrigue."
In
this scenario the Melbourne Cup came under the new technology influence
with the internet and the cell phone . And there was sponsorship,
too.
I
have not read this book in full, but have referred to several sections.
A test for any work in this mode is to read an item, with which
you are familiar. The 1983 Melbourne Cup winner Kiwi was very close
to my acquaintance and the item on this farm-trained endurance horse
passes the test.
An
addition to the litereary content is a CD contain numerous cup commentaries
including the Bart Cummings -trained victories.
