SPEED
AND THE THOROUGHBRED
By
Alexander McKay-Smith
Published
by Derryland Press, Maryland, U S A
This title covers the evolution of speed in the thoroughbred racehorse.
It delves into the contribution made by events, people , studs and
horses in developing speed over the last five centuries.
Six
great males St Simon, Domino, Americus, The Tetrarch, Phalaris and
Havresac are identified as the wonder influences in the breeds transformation.
In line with contemporary equine philosophy there is an awareness
that superior females have made an even greater impact. Bruce Lowe
identified 43 great female lines but only 15 have survived in trhe
speed evolution.
Patriotic
Scots will be surprised to note that Butcher Cumberland , who mercilessly
hacked the Highlanders down at Culloden in 1745 , later became possibly
the most influential individual in enhancing speed in the breed.
He
bred King Herod in 1756 and Eclipse in 1764. He was among the leaders
responsible for founding the Jockey Club in 1752.
Cumberland
was King George IIs second son.
