LEGACIES
OF THE TURF
By
Edward L Bowen
Published by Blood Horse Publications,
Lexington KY USA
Ed
Bowen, a retired US Blood-Horse managing editor, is probably
among the most prolific thoroughbred racing historians
about.
Recently
released LEGACIES OF THE TURF is his 14th title and is the first
part in a two way series. This volume focusses
on
the
great breeders and their background in the 20th century's
first half with a sequel to follow.
There
is a very much an upmarket bias to the North American thoroughbred
breeding industry's
leading lights. There are entrepreneurs and tycoons, who
have lent their skills to
a fervent interest in
thoroughbred breeding, great horse folk, who have sustained
a high profile in the business, and families, who have played
an ongoing
role in the horse world.
There
are not too many with modest backgrounds included among these
racing and breeding dynamos.
A
major attraction to the Bowen publication with its pro North
American focus is that it provides a wonderful
backgrounder
to the equine greats, currently making an international
impact in
racing and breeding circles.
In
the southern hemisphere the great English lines originally established
the breed but
nowadays USA families in the
Northern Dancer mould
are completely dominating the racing scenario.
With
this ongoing development the Bowen book should be an insight
into the ever developing North American
influence
into international
racing and breeding.
