PHAR
LAP
By
Geoff Armstrong and
Peter Thompson,
September 2001
(Published
by Allen and Unwin
New South Wales and
Wellington, New Zealand.)
This
is a paper back edition to the Armstrong-Thomson book released late
in the year 2000.
New
Zealand born but a galloping wonder in his adopted country Australia
, Phar Lap's amazing racetrack achievements, often under crushing
weights ,have been chronicled over the years. They are included
in this volume with a broad photographic coverage.
A
focus in earlier books was invartiably on his tragic death after
winning his inaugural North American race the Agua Caliente Stakes
in Mexico.
These
texts pursued the belief that Phar Lap was maliciously poisoned
by the underworld . What a story that made. What intrigue!
But
in the latest book the co-authors relate that scientific evidence
shows that the wonder horse died from natural causes. He succumbed
to a disease that was an unknown malady in 1932.
The
focus on this aspect makes fine reading as does the recollection
of Phar Lap's halcyon days.
