- Scientific
Training of Thoroughbred Horses
- By the Australian, Professor Allan Davie
A relatively small 92-page soft covered book, this is the second
title on training racehorses by Dr Davie from New South Wales,
Australia.
The content deals with training physiology, designing training
programmes and outlines different factors affecting a horse's
responses to training and performance. The author looks at energy
development and oxygen consumption and the differing requirements
for sprinters and endurance runners. He explains how fatigue
sets in and stress levels increase.
Dr Davie emphasises that a stress level needs to be continually
increased. Stress levels determine a horse's ability to
improve in training condition. The
book dwells on continuous training, interval training and
treadmill use in the ongoing scheme to increase heart capacity
and have
more blood pumped into the system with each heart beat.
Horse people with experience in scientific study will have a major empathy
with the Dr Davie observations. The book could be a little overwhelming for
trainers with a lay background.
The Dr Davie title retails at $NZ 53 in New Zealand.
