RACEHORSE
BREEDING
edited by Frank Mitchell PhD
published
by Russell Meerdink, Neenah, Wisconsin USA
Thoroughbred breeding principles have found new vistas in the last
two decades.
Traditionally literature in the field involved notable personalities
, both human and equine and there was a strong historical bias.
It has all changed with academics ( in many instances) researching varying
arenas to bring a new diversity into thoroughbred philosophy.
A new book Racehorse Breeding Theories was launched in April 2004
under Frank Mitchell's auspicses. A Ph D, Mitchell has collated
works by five noted authorities ( with a USA bias) to provide the
industry with a backgrounder to the new technology and the scientific
development it represents.
These days literary contributors have entered new vistas, probing
into linebreeding , into dosage principles, nicking, heart scores
and nowadays into genetics. The new technology, dominated by the
computer scenario, has enabled researchers to utilise new scientific
data and expand breeding knowledge to amazing heights.
The
contributors in the Frank Mitchell book are Dr Steven Roman,
Rommy Faversham,
David Dink, Jay Leimbach and the West Australian
Ross Staaden.
Dr
Roman, a Texas industrial chemist, has developed the dosage system,
which can assist in measuring a horse's aptitude.
Rommy
Faversham was a practising physician, who transferred his skills
into thoroughbred breeding.
With
evergreen USA identity Leon Rasmussen. he wrote the fast selling
Inbreeding to Superior Females, published
in New South Wales.
Jay
Leimbach is a linebreeding exponent and a freelance writer, pedigree
analysist and thoroughbred owner.
.David Dink is a widely
recognised writer and columnist with a pedigree and statistical
bias. He has spent a lifetime with a passionate verve for the thoroughbred.
The
West Australian veterinary surgeon Rod Staaden gained international
distinction with his book Winning Trainers Their Road To The Top.
He holds a Ph D in exercise science. In the new book , he evaluates
breeding theories.
