DOSAGE
- PEDIGREE AND PERFORMANCE
By Dr Steven A Roman
Published by Russell Meerdink, Wisconsin USA
Dosage analysis is a facility to help appraise a thoroughbreds
aptitude. Various practitioners have been allied with the procedure
since early last century and Dr Steven Roman is currently the key
figure .
Dosage involves the key names ( the chefs-de-race )in the breed
over many decades and the aptitudes they transmit. Dr Roman has
devised an index and the higher the score the higher the speed factor.
Conversely a low index suggests a staying or middle distance bias.
In applying dosage principles, breeders can plan for a particular
type of foal when aptitude is being considered.
The thoroughbred breed has become sharper with a new focus on speed
even at longer raceday assignments, Dr Roman claims . Jumpers are
quicker, too, his research has found, with ex-sprinters often more
nimble footed than their more dour adversaries.
Dr Roman focuses keenly on Kentucky Derby trends and his dosage
formula plays a vital part in these observations.
The chefs-de-race are all-male and Dr Roman doesnt feature
females in this analysis. He explains why in his text. As a pedigree
consultant I find dosage contributes substantially to breeding programmes
and upgrading thoroughbred families, It has an important role to
play and must be respected.
Dr Romans new book is the first on dosage in 30 years when
Dr Varola was centre stage. As can be expected there are many pages
allied with pedigrees and statistics to illustrate the dosage influence.
