THE
THOROUGHBRED BROODMARE BOOK
By Clive Harper
Published by Matter Of Record, Derby, Kansas, USA
Most
researchers involved with the modern thoroughbred racehorse focus
on the influence
emanating from the female in the species.
New
Zealander Clive Harper follows the trend in his new title The
Thoroughbred Broodmare
Book.
A
sequel to his earlier work The Thoroughbred Breeders' Handbook,
released in 1997, the latest book claims that the best method
to upgrade thoroughbred families is for breeders to concentrate
on
improving their broodmares.
Studs
and individual breeders should focus on these matrons for at
least two generations in
the ongoing programme to
improve their families. This involves judicious planning
and utilising
the proven
sex balanced linebreeding or inbreeding guidelines. The
author emphasises that the most expensive and upmarket sires
are
not necessary for this exercise.
A
retired Education lecturer at the Massey University College,
Harper has had considerable
success as a hobbyist breeder
with a small broodmare band. In the new book he has profiled
10
recent broodmares of the year in the USA, New Zealand,
Australia and
Britain. His pedigree analysis involving these great
matrons is the basis
for the material in the new test.
The
309 pages in the text provide editorial and six remove pedigrees
involving major
winners emanating from the
leading matrons in
the 1990's. There is an indepth analysis with Harper
working extensively on up to 10 generations in many
instances.
Harper
was influenced by the late Harold Hampton in developing his linebreeding
principles and Hampton
devotees around
the world will relish the new title.
The
book is available in soft and hard backed editions.
A
full book review is available in Jack's
Chatter, the item dated 15 August 2003.
